Keep your home safe this holiday season.
Crime Stoppers and RACT have joined forces this summer to launch a new campaign urging Tasmanians to keep their homes secure during the holiday period.
The Secure Home. Safe Summer! campaign highlights the importance of locking up and taking simple precautions to protect homes, particularly during summer when increased travel and time away could leave properties more vulnerable to burglary and theft.
RACT Chief Executive Officer Mark Mugnaioni said the organisation insured more than one-third of Tasmanians’ homes and was keen to share practical advice to help make the community safer.
“With a seasonal rise in burglaries, following a few simple steps can make homes more secure, deter thieves and give Tasmanians peace of mind over summer,” Mr Mugnaioni said.
Crime Stoppers Tasmania Chair David Daniels OAM said campaigns like this one with RACT were about giving people practical tools so they could help protect their neighbourhoods and take greater control over the safety of the communities they live in.
“Crime Stoppers Tasmania has a long and proud history of working with community partners to help educate Tasmanians about how to stay safe, remain alert to suspicious behaviour, and feel confident taking action when something doesn’t seem right,” Mr Daniels said.
The three-month campaign will be promoted on social media, websites, digital billboards and screens at RACT’s branches, along with local newspapers and radio stations.
To support the campaign, RACT has developed a handy checklist to help Tasmanians keep their homes safe while away:
- Lock all doors, windows and entry points; consider deadbolts, window locks or a security system with remote monitoring.
- Use smart technology such as automated lights, plugs and motion sensor lights to make your home look occupied.
- Ask a trusted friend or neighbour to collect mail, maintain your yard and check inside; or arrange to hold mail and pause deliveries.
- Avoid sharing travel plans on social media until you return.
- Secure valuables in a safe or hidden spot.
- Unplug non-essential electronics and test your alarm system.
- Check your insurance policy to ensure it is up to date.
